The story behind the NPO Model and how to turn your real estate transactions into vehicles for community betterment.
Meet Jayme, a dear friend and a testament to perseverance. By any account Jayme has had it very hard. Difficult is an understatement. But instead of packing it in or maybe relying on handouts, Jayme chose empowerment. After a long history of making lemons out of lemonade, we met and decided to work together. He now promotes our services, earning a share in transactions that support him and his fellows in the unhoused community (Veterans and non-vets alike). It’s a symbiotic relationship built on trust and mutual benefit.
But how did all of this start, you say?
Let me take you back to my grad school days in Boston during the early 2000s.
It was a time of discovery, where I stumbled upon a remarkable phenomenon that reshaped my perspective on community and entrepreneurship.
Boston, known for its rich history and vibrant culture, also faced the challenge of homelessness. Yet, amidst this adversity, I witnessed something truly inspiring.
A group of unhoused individuals came together to form businesses, striving to break free from the cycle of panhandling. One standout venture was the Spare Change newspaper, a community-driven initiative that gave voice, empowerment and economic stability to many of the homeless community in the Boston area. This project, still thriving today, exemplified resilience and creativity in the face of hardship.
The ingenuity of this model left a lasting imprint on me. It inspired me to look for ways to infuse my work with projects that uplift segments of the community that were undeserved. One way that we have done this is with the NPO MODEL. Over the years I have engaged in projects with non-profit organizations and charities, inspired by the example of Spare Change News. I carried with me the spirit of innovation and collaboration embodied by this amazing group. For years, I’ve been privileged to partner with diverse communities in need, leveraging real estate and business transactions as a catalyst for community development and social betterment.
